After 20+ Years, Here’s What I Know

JAYSUS. I’ve been doing this for more than twenty years. It’s actually closer to thirty FFS, but saying that makes me sound like I should be giving talks about the early days of the internet, so twenty-plus it is.

I’ve worked on and with BIG national and international brands. I’ve worked with start-ups. I’ve built apps from nothing. I created and sold a children’s clothing line with no fashion experience at all. I’ve seen campaigns take off, and I’ve seen campaigns fall flat on their faces. Not mine, but I’ve genuinely seen the whole spectrum.

The part that still surprises people is that the real impact isn’t just in the execution. It’s in the thinking and the bigger picture behind it all. Clear thinking makes everything easier, and that includes proper brand research behind the scenes. Then I can see how it all fits together, and my brain goes into overdrive with ideas popping into my head. It sharpens the design process. It makes the content work. It makes the strategy obvious. When the thinking is right, the work almost builds itself in my brain. It’s not really that simple, because there is a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff going on, but you get the idea.

The best campaigns start with purpose. The best designs solve a real problem. The best content actually helps the people reading/seeing it. Everything else is the part that makes it look good and keeps it aligned with a working strategy and the brand look and feel. This is nothing like a plumber who does his own marketing. That is all crap. Stick to your trade, mate. I’ll stay in mine.

So yes, I’m experienced, and I stick to what I am good at. Nearly 3 decades of it, even if I’m only admitting to twenty-plus to stay cool with the younger peeps.

Experience doesn’t make me wise or mystical. Gawd, I really hate that word. It just means I don’t waste time on trial and error. I go straight to what works. My clients tend to like that, and yes, it has won them awards. YAY, and that is what makes my year.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a business brand into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
